Sunday, June 7: discovering the Damvallei, Destelbergen. De Damvallei in Destelbergen is an area that originated from an old Scheldt meander that became peat bog. In the marsh area, there are two lakes where numerous water and reed birds breed. The kingfisher, Eurasian reed warbler, and common reed bunting like to show themselves — or be heard — here. Above the water, common terns wait for the right moment to dive. And along the banks, gnawed branches reveal that a beaver is shaping the landscape to its liking at night. Around the lakes are flower-rich, moist grasslands with parallel ditches: a true dragonfly paradise, where rare plants also feel at home. Come and discover it, and expect a good chance of cheerful croaking, enthusiastic fellow walkers, and at least one “wow, I didn't know that.” And probably wet feet for those who didn't think of sturdy shoes! Meeting point: 9:00 AM at the parking lot at the sports hall in Eeklo, corner of the parking lot with B.L.Pussemierstraat, or at 9:40 AM at the sports hall Bergenmeers, Koedreef 1 in Destelbergen Registration is possible on our website www.natuurpunt.be/eeklo-kaprijke-evergem Guide: Karel Van Zele, karel.vanzele@skynet.be
