St Matthew Passion

Bach. 300 years ago, on Goede Vrijdag 1727, Bachs Matteüspassie sounded for the first time in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Together with the St. John Passion, this work is considered an absolute top achievement. Waar de Johannespassie tells the passion story in a dramatic way, the Matteüspassie is more contemplative: it primarily highlights the human and the suffering of Jesus. Bach wrote the piece for two four-part choirs each with its own orchestra, plus six soloists who interpret roles as narrator, Jesus, and Peter. The choirs enter into dialogue or conflict with each other, which creates a timeless sound. The double ensemble provides grandiose music that remains just as impressive after 300 years. The brilliant interweaving of instruments and vocals shows Bach's mastery: vulnerable and majestic at the same time.
