Tutu Puoane & Ewout Pierreux

Zangeres Tutu Puoane and pianist Ewout Pierreux met during a rehearsal in 2003 in Leuven and have been inseparable ever since. As musical - and life partners, they know each other through and through. From the cross-pollination of Puoane’s South African roots and Pierreux’s piano playing, rooted in classical music and jazz, a unique mix of African, European, and American music traditions emerged, soaked in soul and jazz, their two great shared loves. They have been working together for over 20 years in various projects and have released a handful of albums together in various line-ups. In Voor Tutu’s recent double album project ‘Wrapped In Rhythm’, they wrote a bunch of new songs together based on the poetry of Tutu’s fellow countrywoman and contemporary Lebogang Mashile. Mashile's poetry offers a unique and very personal insight into the reality and emotional world of a young black African woman of the first post-Apartheid generation in South Africa. Volume 1 of the project, produced by Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Thomas Dybdahl, Herbie Hancock, Tracy Chapman, ...), was released in March 2024. Volume 2 is a collaboration with the world-famous Nederlandse Metropole Orkest with arrangements by Bert Joris and was released in September 2025. In duo, they are just the two of them, with all the space, mobility, and intimacy that entails, and they undertake a journey through their extensive repertoire of standards, a few covers, and a bunch of their own songs. A trip that is just a little different every time, but always with a touch of magic that makes every concert a unique experience.
