Documentaire Charlotte and Maximiliaan

This documentary tells the tragic fate of Emperor Maximilian and his wife, Charlotte van België, two monarchs from the great noble families of Europe who were destined to ascend the throne of Mexico. Against their will, they become entangled in a drama that is beyond their control, caught between the ambitions of France under the leadership of Napoleon III, the unyielding attitude of the Austrian Emperor Frans Jozef, and the expansionist plans of the Verenigde Staten. Following in the footsteps of Charlotte and Maximilian means traveling from Brussels to Milan and from Vienna to Paris, before crossing the Atlantische Oceaan to Mexico, the country where Maximilian met his death in 1867.
