Sonder

Sonder is a poignant theater production that uses technology to explore loss, grief, and humanity. The piece builds on a project by art photographer Kaat Pype: after the unexpected death of her mother, she invited single women to stay temporarily in her father's house. Yves Degryse and BERLIN make a documentary about it and transform it into a live performance. On stage, Pype's father, a former police officer, has imaginary conversations with his deceased wife. This role is partly fulfilled by Alva Ishii, a digital AI artist from NTGent, who absorbs memories of the mother and gives answers that she might have given. Thus, Sonder explores how technology can prolong grief and presence, while simultaneously confronting us with the limits of letting go. Although AI is prominently present, the performance is not about technology, but about the experience of loss and connection. Sonder asks fundamental questions about life, death, memory, and the role of technology in our daily existence. It is a poetic and deeply human reflection on the mystery of (life after) death.
