HUNTER - Liesa van der Aa

A group of eight players comes together on a basketball court. The referee whistles. The match begins. Something bounces. It could be a ball. It could also be a rhythm. Are we witnessing a cheerful match? Or are we part of a hunt for humanity? For ‘HUNTER’, the Flemish director, composer, and multidisciplinary artist Liesa Van der Aa joins the Berlin vocal ensemble B O D I E S for a game of basketball. For a piece about rules, the consequences of rules, the roles we play within those rules, and the human condition. For a piece about one of the most discussed subjects in opera: the state of the heart. ‘HUNTER’ is inspired by one of the most iconic works from contemporary pop music, ‘Homogenic’ by the Icelandic singer and composer Björk. Musically, the playful voices of B O D I E S meet original compositions by Liesa Van der Aa, songs by Björk, and electronic sounds. A musical battle against insensitivity and social disruption. A hunt for the heart. Liesa van der Aa enjoyed a strict musical education as a violin student at the conservatory based on the classical Western repertoire. “The beautiful, but very detailed music of Mozart represents my musical socialization. It has made me a control freak.” The love for detail and the strictness of the classical Western music tradition are reflected in her own hermetically sealed compositions.
