De Japanse Midori Hirano is from Kyoto, but has lived in Berlin for years. Rooted in classical piano music, expanded with electronics and field recordings, Hirano creates compelling soundscapes in which acoustic intimacy and experimental abstraction come together.
With albums on labels such as Sonic Pieces - see also Nils Frahm, Dustin O’Halloran and Deaf Center (in CCHA on Sep 22, 26) - and the Gentse Dauw she established a very own artistic voice in the (post)classical music world. In addition, Hirano also worked with artists such as Hprizm van Anti Pop Consortium and Ilpo Väisänen of the legendary Pan Sonic.
Last year, at the request of Film Fest Gent, Hirano created a new soundtrack for The Juniper Tree, a forgotten pearl of European arthouse cinema with a very young Björk in the lead role. Her most recent solo album OTONOMA has just been released on record label Thrill Jockey (Tortoise, Colleen, Jeff Parker…).
