Technology and the future of humankind

Philosopher Antonio Diéguez to Lead a Discussion on Biology, Transhumanism, Technological Determinism and Human Enhancement. The Association of Spanish Scientists in Belgium (CEBE), in collaboration with the Cervantes Institute Brussels, is organising the 10th edition of Spanish Influencers in Science, an annual series that brings together leading Spanish and Belgian researchers to make science and critical thinking more accessible to the general public. This year's edition will feature Antonio Diéguez, Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Málaga and a leading expert in the philosophy of biology, transhumanism, technological determinism and human enhancement. Entitled "Technology and the Future of Being Human," the event will explore some of the most pressing questions raised by emerging technologies: How are they reshaping our understanding of what it means to be human? What promises and risks accompany transhumanism, artificial intelligence and human enhancement? To what extent does technology shape our societies, our bodies and our ways of life? The event will take place on Tuesday, 22 September, at the Cervantes Institute Brussels and is aimed at a general audience interested in science, technology, and their social and philosophical implications. The event is organised by CEBE with the support of the Cultural and Scientific Office of the Embassy of Spain in Brussels, the Ramón Areces Foundation, and the Cervantes Institute Brussels. ANTONIO DIÉGUEZ Antonio Diéguez is Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Málaga. He is a Full Member of the Málaga Academy of Sciences and served on the Spanish Committee on Research Ethics from 2023 to 2025. His research focuses on scientific realism, the philosophy of biology, the philosophy of technology, human enhancement, and transhumanism. He is the author of numerous academic articles and books. His major publications include 'The Evolution of Knowledge: From the Animal Mind to the Human Mind' (Biblioteca Nueva, 2011), 'Life Under Scrutiny: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Biology' (Biblioteca Buridán, 2012), 'Transhumanism: The Technological Quest for Human Enhancement' (Herder, 2017), 'Inadequate Bodies' (Herder, 2021), 'Science Under Question: Dissent, Denial and Objectivity' (Herder, 2024), 'Thinking Technology' (Shackleton, 2024), and 'Hand in Hand with Darwin' (Comares, 2025).
