Three people with an interesting life path are coming to the Saint-Gilles library to share their story with you. As a “Levend Boek” you can “borrow” them for half an hour (but not take them home).
Katleen lives between highs and lows
Language: NL
Katleen was diagnosed with bipolar disorder a few years ago. When she flies, she flies high. When she falls, she crashes hard. She goes from happy to ecstatic, from in love to obsessively loving, from worried to paralyzed with fear, from tired to exhausted and finally... completely empty. But every single time she climbs back up.
Rashed is visually impaired
Language: NL, EN
Rashed was born visually impaired. He first went to a specialized school, later he switched to regular education. Independent living, housing, and working were central to him. He succeeded brilliantly in this, although some doors remained closed. It also took him years in his job to prove that he is just as valuable as his colleagues. That is why he campaigns for inclusion so that future generations get more opportunities.
Biser is a Roma
Talen: Dutch, French, English, Romani, Russian, Bulgarian & Turks
Biser grew up in Bulgaria and ended up in Belgium via many detours. With his university background and great passion for his community, he is committed to giving Roma youth more opportunities. Biser introduces you to the surprising, rich history and culture of the Roma.
De Levende Boeken tell their story 3 times, each time to just one person (the "Reader" of their life story). This is how we preserve the intimacy of these conversations. A first time at 10:30 AM, a second time at 11:15 AM and a last time at 12:00 PM.
You can reserve a number of these spots by registering at the desk or by sending us an email. We keep another part free so that people can also drop by on the day itself and discover the Levende Bibliotheek.
See you then? Saturday, November 21 in the Bibliotheek van Sint-Gillis.
