Guided walk: Antwerp - From poor relief to social policy

Looking for traces of care, poverty, and solidarity – from the past to today. During this walk, we discover places and buildings in Antwerp where the poor, sick, and needy were cared for over the centuries. Contemporary concepts such as the Sociaal Centrum (formerly: OCMW), beggars on the street, and shelter for the homeless find their roots in a long history that goes back centuries. A look behind the facade Did you know that the Sociaal Centrum found its origin in the ‘concern’ of the well-to-do bourgeoisie in the 16th century? Their motivation at the time was less focused on care for the poor, but all the more on protecting their own wealth. Even in the Middle Ages, forms of shelter for the homeless and sick already existed, although this help was often subject to strict conditions. During this walk, we visit locations that have been connected to poverty care for centuries and where that historical link is still visible. This activity is part of the Werelddag van Verzet against Poverty, which is held every year on October 17.
