Where we are — Collective listening (sound documentary)

This documentary (52 minutes) traces the journey of Maria Sueli, a Brazilian political refugee engaged in the struggle against the dictatorship that ravaged Brazil between 1965 and 1985. In 1972, she is forced to flee to survive. She leaves Brazil for Chile, then Panama, before finding refuge in Belgium, where she has lived for more than fifty years. A story long left untold, transmitted in fragments. Through the relationship with her daughter Carolina, born in Belgium, stateless at birth and recognized as a refugee by the UN during her early years, the documentary explores questions of exile, transmission, family heritage, and biculturality. It also questions the traces that resistance leaves, and what these commitments transmit to subsequent generations. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmakers as well as Maria and Carolina. The evening may continue informally over a drink.
