As the residence of the Holy Roman Emperor and, together with Paris, the largest city north of the Alps, it became a breeding ground for artistic innovation. From this cosmopolitan metropolis, the refined ‘beautiful style’ of the Gothic spread, in which spirituality and aesthetic elegance merged and which also left its mark on the music of that time. The veneration of the great Bohemian saints formed the spiritual foundation of this culture. Around figures such as Saint Wenceslaus, Saint Ludmila, and Saint Vojtěch, a brilliant repertoire emerged that unites faith and artistic refinement. This program, brought by Cappella Mariana, revolves entirely around that devotion and, through choral chants, hymns, and motets from authentic Czech sources, brings the rich sound world of medieval Bohemia back to life.
