Day trip

On Thursday, August 20, 2026, we will head to the north of France for a day. The ties between the Aa valley and our Houtland are strong. Together we will discover Saint-Omer and Thérouanne. De Sint-Bertin Abbey was once one of the most influential monasteries in northwestern Europe. Its possessions extended into our region. Verschillende Vlaamse counts have their final resting place there. The city center of Saint-Omer is versatile and has recently been attractively opened up for those who love history. Definitely a city to discover (again). We will visit, among other things, the new "Musée du Patrimoine". Thérouanne is now just a banal French village. Founded by the Romans, it was once an important city. No fewer than 59 bishops once passed through here! Keizer Karel had the entire city destroyed, but a new archaeological museum now shows many relics of its former greatness.
