Lazarus

Boze Geesten is a theatrical adaptation of the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky. Central to it is the question: is violence justified, and if so, to what extent? Themes surrounding power, ideology, and faith are central. With this performance, LAZARUS completes its series of adaptations of the four great novels by Dostoevsky. After, among others, The Idiot, The Brothers Karamazov, and Crime and Punishment, they are tackling Boze Geesten, the most political novel of the four. The story takes place in a small, wealthy community in the countryside where peace is disturbed when a young generation wants to spark a revolution out of dissatisfaction. Their approach is reckless and destructive, without a clear plan for the future. Nihilists and socialists, God and old power structures collide with each other. Angry spirits and demonic innocence alternate in a parade of passionate characters who fight for their honor and their convictions — even those who believe they believe in nothing.
