Guided tour of the archaeological excavation Voormezele-Kalleputstraat (Ieper)

What is hidden underground in Voormezele? Archaeologists are currently investigating a site along the Kalleputstraat, where a new water purification and buffer installation will soon be built. In the process, a surprising number of traces from the past are coming to light. During the excavation, a British combat trench from the Eerste Wereldoorlog was recovered. This was taken over by the Germans in 1918, during the German Spring Offensive. Nearby, three German bunkers also came to light, connected to the trench. Among the finds are a small stove and a British rum jug. But the story does not stop at WWI. Archaeologists also discovered medieval ditches and pits. This is extra interesting because across the street once lay the important Augustinian abbey of Voormezele, founded in the 11th century. During this free guided tour, the archaeologists will take you across the site and tell you what they have discovered so far.
