Sietske Van Aerde - Scenes from the Front Garden (De Langste Dag)

Sat, 20 Jun 2026 · 13:30
Leopold park, Ostend
Free
The desire to bring a statue to life or conversely to turn a human into stone is an age-old fantasy. Van Ovidius’ ‘Metamorphoses’ (in which Pygmalion falls in love with his statue Galatea and kisses her to life, or Nubia who turns into a rock with a waterfall of tears) to the film by Maya Deren ‘Ritual in Transfigured Time’, where a statue becomes a virtuoso dancer. From real arms as stone candlesticks in ‘la Belle et la bête’ by Cocteau, to the street where people dressed as statues fool you. From the mischievous Pinocchio to our front gardens where marble classical statues of women innocently try to lure us to paradise with their baskets. PRACTICAL Duration: continuous from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM ABOUT THE LONGEST DAY From sunrise to sunset. Artists move in and between Mu.ZEE and KAAP in Ostend. Various performances, some continuous. One visible and loud, the other barely perceptible. The actions follow the rhythm of the sun, the tides, and the clock. It will be a long day, almost the longest. Only when the sun sets does the happening end… and the afterparty begins.
