Free heathland walk

In the past, heathlands were vast areas; now only a few scraps remain, including Vloethemveld, which, with its tens of hectares of heath, is still a habitat for numerous rare animals and plants. The former layout of the ammunition depot in Vloethemveld, with its many protective dams (or merlons) around the ammunition barracks, ensured the additional development of this unique heath biotope with common heather, cross-leaved heath, and bell heather. These embankments with their sandy, nutrient-poor soil are also the home of, among others, the antlion, the digger wasp, and the viviparous lizard.
