De Paelsteenpanne is the largest dune slack on the east coast at the foot of the imposing Spanjaardduin, one of the highest dunes on the coast. The very lime-rich area consists of a colorful mosaic of dune scrub, small grasslands, drier moss dunes, a few pools, and a lower-lying, wet dune valley. The variation in vegetation provides numerous natural gems there. During this tour, we will go on a discovery in the Paelsteenpanne, in search of wild bees and other typical insects of our coastal dunes. We will also pause to consider the impact that invasive plants have on this valuable nature and learn to recognize them.
