"Our cemetery must look like a large park," asserted Jules Anspach, mayor of Brussels. It is moreover the landscape architect Fuchs, and not an architect, who is going to be in charge of its layout. The 38 hectares shelter graves, but also a body of water with a meditation garden, beehives, an orchard, and fallow lawns to promote biodiversity.
The paths meander around the plots, the enclosures are delimited by hedges. The map of the cemetery speaks of avenues, roundabouts, like in an urban center, which draw beautiful perspectives. Everything has been thought out to give the appearance of a park and a walking place to this cemetery, the largest in the Brussels-Region. Even though it is surrounded by heavily trafficked urban arteries, a particular and soothing atmosphere emanates from it. Walk with us through this place of remembrance, with its graves telling small and great history, but also a space conducive to strolling.
This visit is organized as part of the Slow Ways Week-End organized by Walk Brussels.
