Met Persepolis (2007) translates Marjane Satrapi her own youth into a sharp, personal, and outspoken political statement. She brings the story of a young girl growing up during and after the Iranian revolution, tossed back and forth between rebelliousness, loss, and the search for her own identity. What begins as a coming-of-age unfolds as an uncompromising look at how political systems intrude upon the most intimate life. The choice for sober black-and-white animation—inspired by Satrapi’s original graphic novel—strengthens the directness of the story: refined lines, strong contrasts, and an almost childlike clarity make the harsh reality all the more poignant. The voices of Chiara Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve give extra layering to a story that constantly switches between humor and tragedy. Today, Persepolis remains undiminished in its urgency: a film that refuses to nuance where that is not possible, and that sharply states that personal freedom is not an abstract idea, but a continuous struggle, still and everywhere.
