Kasteel van Evergem, Evergem

(Re)discover the Kasteel van Evergem, also known as the former ‘skippers' school’, during a guided tour through the main rooms of the building. Het Kasteel van Evergem has a fascinating history that goes back to the Middle Ages and is closely linked to the origin and history of the municipality of Evergem. The castle in its current form was built around 1912 in beaux-arts style and has had several owners since then. From 1948, the ‘State Home for children of skippers and fairground travelers’ was housed there. In 1978, all school functions were moved to a new building, which left the castle empty. Eventually, the building found a new owner in 2024 who is all too eager to give it a new future. There is still a lot of work to be done, but the castle of Evergem is already in good hands! Practical info: To keep the visit on the right track, the visitor must reserve a time slot. Upon arrival, one must sign up for the chosen start moment. There are multiple start moments per hour. Following the guide along a marked route is mandatory. We recommend sturdy footwear and we provide safety helmets. A brochure with the history of the castle and the domain is available on site. Accessibility: The location is not suitable for children under 10 years old and people who have difficulty walking. The tour in the castle is under supervision. Groups up to a maximum of 10 people. Reserving a time slot is necessary.
