The promising goalkeeper from Galashiels, a small Scottish town, dreams of a glorious career as a professional footballer, but when an important scout comes to watch a match, he suddenly starts suffering from strange tics. He also gets into trouble at school because he keeps swearing and shouting inappropriate things in everyone's face. As a result, he is not only bullied, but he is also gradually excluded by his own family and becomes increasingly isolated. When doctors diagnose him with Tourette syndrome, it doesn't really help much: in the 80s, not much was known about this condition, and even the doctors themselves did not understand the disease well. Fortunately, there is Dottie, the down-to-earth mother of an old classmate: the unexpected bond between the terminally ill woman and the teenager who swears, blurts out obscenities, and is full of uncontrollable tics ensures that he regains some self-confidence, dares to just be himself, and confront everyone with prejudices (including his family) with an open mind. ‘I SWEAR’ is a story based on true events about the importance of honesty in dispelling prejudices, and the role that humor can play in that. The real John Davidson – played here wonderfully by Robert Aramayo – grew into the very successful spokesperson for the Tourette community, who managed to almost single-handedly dispel the misunderstandings and lack of understanding about the condition – or at least in Great Britain. This highly entertaining and fucking funny film unexpectedly snatched three of the most important BAFTAs (the British version of the Oscars) from under the noses of some Hollywood stars – screw you, Leonardo DiCaprio !
