Visit to Cannerberg and Vieille Montagne

Saturday, June 27, 2026 : Day trip to Cannerberg and Vieille Montagne. On Saturday, June 27 next, it's that time again. As is the annual custom, KWB/RAAK Groot-Bijgaarden is going on a day trip. Every year we look for destinations that are less known or new. Less known but therefore no less fascinating or interesting. For example, two years ago we visited the dry docks in the port of Antwerp and last year Arras. This year the day trip goes towards South Limburg. We leave at 7:30 AM opposite restaurant ‘Brisk’ (formerly restaurant Michel) on the Gossetlaan. After breakfast with a coffee pastry and coffee or tea in the theater café in Hasselt, we head towards Cannerberg, near Maastricht. We will visit the former NATO headquarters during the Koude Oorlog. During a guided tour, experienced guides will take you through the impressive underground tunnels and unravel the secrets of this once-strategic stronghold. We will have lunch in the restaurant of the Wilhelminatoren at the Three-Country Point in Vaals. A three-course menu awaits us there. In the afternoon, a visit to the museum of Vieille Montagne in Kelmis is planned. We will discover the fascinating history of a small area that was coveted for its natural resources: Neutraal Moresnet – a 'microstate' somewhere between a mining center and a smuggler's paradise, a 'no man's land' between Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. Zinc, the 'plastic of the 19th century', mining, and the fascinating world of minerals. What was the connection between Napoleon's bathtub and Neu Moresnet, we will find out there. …/… Another stop to quench the thirst and around 7:30 PM we are back in Groot-Bijgaarden. The price per person is € 89/person (all included: the coach, breakfast coffee with pastry, the three-course lunch, admission to Cannerberg and Vieille-Montagne, and the guide).
