Film Music for Strings

Film Music for Strings promises to be a captivating journey through the finest film scores and the biggest names in film music. While the grandeur of the large symphony orchestra often takes centre stage, many composers also opt for the intimacy and rich tones of the string orchestra. Conductor Dirk Brossé, harmonica player Rutger Mathys and the Prima La Musica orchestra bring iconic scores to life in their purest form: just strings, pure emotion. We experience the monumental power of William Walton’s Henry V, the psychological tension of Bernard Herrmann’s Psycho, and the timeless elegance of John Williams, whose poignant A Prayer for Peace from Munich ranks among the most moving film scores ever composed. Gabriel Yared and Debbie Wiseman, too, imbue historical figures such as Camille Claudel and Oscar Wilde with a subtle, almost tangible lyricism. The poetic melancholy of Shigeru Umebayashi in 2046 and A Single Man exudes an air of oriental elegance, while Jan A. P. Kaczmarek touches the heart with the fragile themes from Hachi: A Dog’s Tale and Unfaithful. And, of course, Astor Piazzolla is a must: his stirring Libertango and the irresistible Oblivion add a warm, human touch. There is also powerful expression to be found in Belgian compositions, with music by Frédéric Devreese, Michelino Bisceglia and Dirk Brossé himself, including the moving Lament for a Fallen Tree from Onze Natuur.
