Urban flora is the collective name for a group of wild plant species that often occur in cities or villages, also called urban plants.
You will also find them in the center of Lanaken, including on walls or parking lots, but also in some messy corners and even in the cemetery.
Many plants feel right at home in the city. They are species that can take a beating. They are walked and driven over, they often grow in very dry places, they are sprinkled with salt, there is often little root space (joints), …. In short, they are true survivors.
Street spurge (see photo) has adapted to life in the city. It is native to the warm and temperate part of North America. You will often find it in the center between paving stones and in parking lots. Dozens of plants often stand together in its growing places.
On Thursday, September 24, 2026, you can explore the urban flora from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM with a guide from Natuurpunt Lanaken. The walk is approximately 2.5 km long.
