Gloria always believed she was ‘fairly unique’. Until one day she runs into herself. Or no; someone who looks a lot like her. Someone with exactly the same name, the same body, the same dreams. The more she tries to be original, the further she sinks into a simulation of her own life. Until she realizes that she has become exactly what she had always fled from; a reproduction, a duplicate, a pastiche of herself. COPYRIOT is about our search for stability in a world that increasingly seems like a copy of a copy. Inspired by the films of Charlie Kaufman and Dostoevsky’s absurd short story De Dubbelganger, Krapp wants to evoke a tragicomic mirror world full of strange doublings and dubious doppelgängers. Because although individuality seems to be the highest good, we are increasingly confused with our virtual doppelgängers; those idealized spirits that look a lot like us and — who knows — might one day become ‘realer’ than we are ourselves. With COPYRIOT, Krapp tries to look the ‘monstrous’ in the eye again. After having dealt with paranoid cyborgs, gothic ghosts, and the Devil himself in earlier work, they now confront the greatest monster of modernity; the ‘self’. trigger warning: the performance uses stroboscopic light, loud music, and blackouts
