I am a tree is an intimate, investigative journey into masculinity, fatherhood, and the legacy of our (fore)fathers. Wanneer Jozefien Mombaerts mother becomes of a son, she unexpectedly bumps hard into the structures of the patriarchy and the persistent role models that determine our imagination. What does it mean today to raise a boy? Where do we find alternatives to the loudest voices in the debate? And which old father images do we carry with us unconsciously: the father who is silent louder than he breathes, the emotionally unavailable father, the drunk father? Through the female gaze, she tries to break open the imagination around masculinity, while at the same time speaking honestly about her own fears, desires, and doubts.
Together with Joeri Cnapelinckx, she makes this musical literary road trip. He succeeds in suggesting the answer to unanswered questions through sound and music. Everything that is not said in the text is given a place in that way.
