The area of saline grasslands in the coastal polders is approximately 465 ha. Of this, 97 ha are located in the Uitkerkse Polder. To a limited extent, salt water comes directly from the sea into the polder via the Blankenbergse Vaart, but the largest amount of (fossil) salt is located in the thick peat layers under the surface clay (source: Uitkerkse polder, John Van Gompel and Misjel Decleer). Saline plants occur where upwelling groundwater (saline seepage) comes to the surface or where there is contact with salt (brackish) surface water. Under the guidance of an enthusiastic nature guide, we will go in search of: glasswort, sea orache, spear-leaved orache, sea-milkwort,... and much more. 📌 USEFUL TIPS FOR PARTICIPANTS 👕 Dress in layers. The weather changes quickly, especially on the coast. 👖 Wear long pants. 🌦️ Provide rain protection. 👢 Put on boots. 🔭 Bring binoculars or a telescope. 🐞 Protect yourself against insects. 🌞 Don't forget your sunscreen, cap, or hat! 🧴 Bring drinks. 🐶 Leave your dog at home.
