Jenny Gutmann presents "Look at Port-au-Prince – Lives and places" at Espace 694
From November 5, Espace 694, at Signal de Botrange, hosts the photographic exhibition "Look at Port-au-Prince – Lives and places" by artist Jenny Gutmann.
In 2011, Jenny Gutmann stays several weeks in Port-au-Prince to lead a photographic workshop there with people affected by the disaster. Along her movements, she simultaneously produces a series of images testifying to daily life in a city still deeply marked by the earthquake.
The exhibition presented at Espace 694 – Tourist Info Botrange - Waimes focuses on places, environments and scenes of life. The inhabitants appear there at the heart of disrupted spaces, between rubble, precarious constructions and improvised living spaces. Bodies inhabit these spaces and the landscape becomes much more than a simple backdrop: it too tells a story, that of a population that organizes itself, adapts and continues its life despite difficult conditions.
Between disorder and poetry, Jenny Gutmann lingers on ordinary scenes that take on a particular dimension in this context. Her photographs evoke the living conditions in Port-au-Prince, but above all tell of life continuing, everyday gestures and the ability of inhabitants to re-occupy their environment.
This series also occupies a special place in the artist's journey. After many years dedicated to black-and-white photography and the observation of reality, her work gradually evolved towards a more fictional approach, leaving more room for staging and imagination. Fifteen years after their creation, Jenny Gutmann meets these images today with emotion and nostalgia, reconnecting with the memories, encounters and experiences that marked this trip.
Two exhibitions, two views on the same trip
The exhibition at Espace 694 is part of a broader project around this stay in Port-au-Prince. From mid-November, the Cultural Center of Theux will present a second part of the series, devoted this time more to portraits and faces met by the artist.
Two places, two complementary approaches: in Waimes, spaces and scenes of life; in Theux, inhabitants and portraits. A double invitation to discover Port-au-Prince through those who live it and the places they inhabit.
