Constant Permeke. De Engelse years (1914-1919) - visit exhibition

Wed, 10 Jun 2026 · 14:00
Permeke Museum, Jabbeke
€4–24
What happened to Constant Permeke during his 'English years', his forced stay in England during WWI? Did his artistic development come to a standstill – or did it find a decisive acceleration? He worked there in relative isolation, detached from direct artistic influences. That was precisely what was decisive: he developed a powerful, personal visual language there that laid the foundations for his later work. Not a skipped chapter, then, but a period of intense renewal. Inne Gheeraert, curator and coordinator of the Permeke Museum, takes you on a guided tour through the exhibition 'Constant Permeke. De Engelse years 1914–1919'. With clear stories and surprising insights, she offers a glimpse into a crucial but often under-exposed period of Permeke's oeuvre. This guided tour is part of a series of lectures accompanying the exhibition about Permeke's English years (until November 15 at the Permeke Museum in Jabbeke). On June 18, you are also welcome at the lecture 'De Engelse years: intermezzo or turning point?'. In collaboration with Bibliotheek Jabbeke, Gemeentebestuur Jabbeke, Permeke Museum Guides: Inne Gheeraert,
