Alexander Ekdahl and his younger sister Fanny grow up in the cozy Zweedse Uppsala at the beginning of the 20th century. De Ekdahls celebrate Christmas extensively with a Christmas tree in every room and a visit to the theater, which the family manages. When father Ekdahl suddenly dies, the mother remarries a powerful Lutheran bishop. The children move to a strictly puritanical place where their stepfather turns into a real tyrant. Fanny and Alexander are miserable until the elderly Jewish family friend of their grandmother offers them a refuge.
