30 years of The blue moods of Spain - Spain

In the early nineties, the slowcore genre emerged: slow, melancholic rock with the most famous bands being Low, Red House Painters, Codeine, Cowboy Junkies, Smog, and... Spain. It is one of the most passionate bands imaginable. Their wonderfully slow, simple, but oh-so-effective songs with lyrics about heartbreak always hit deep. Debuut The blue moods of Spain from 1995, with a perfect balance between style and content, grew into a classic and gave the group around Josh Haden (son of jazz bassist Charlie Haden) a cult status. With their wistful, atmospheric sound and deeply personal and reflective lyrics, Spain combines elements of jazz, blues, and indie rock. With songs like Spiritual, an enchanting ballad later covered by icons like Johnny Cash and Pat Metheny, Spain managed to create a unique combination of melancholy and minimalism. After the third album I believe from 2001, things went quiet around the group for a long time and Josh Haden worked with The Soulsavers, among others. In the period 2012-2016, four new albums appeared, including a stop at CCHA in December 2012. On the occasion of 30 years of The blue moods of Spain (including a beautiful reissue on vinyl), the band already toured Europe at the end of 2025 with stops in Kortrijk and Antwerp. This autumn, Josh Haden and band are coming to CCHA again for an integral performance of the cult album! vocals & bass Josh Haden / guitar Kenny Lyon / guitar & keyboards Shon Sullivan / drums Jakob Høyer spaintheband.com
