Ghent at the fault line: unity, chaos and the separation of the Netherlands

Mon, 20 Jul 2026 · 08:00
Ingang kathedraal (autovrije zone), Ghent
€10–12
We dive into a time where religion, power, and rebellion go hand in hand. In 1576, the northern and southern provinces signed a historic Peace Treaty in the Ghent city hall that would forever resolve the prevailing religious tensions after the fury of the iconoclasm. Unfortunately, the dream of unity and freedom ends. After 72 years, the separation of the Lage Landen is definitively sealed. Together with the Netherlands, Ghent commemorates the "Pacification", a treaty that was ahead of its time. Guide: Toon Van den Abeele
