Vilain XIIII walk

Sun, 2 Aug 2026 · 14:00
Achterkant kerk Bazel, Beveren-Kruibeke-Zwijndrecht
Free
Free walk. Please register. From castle park to polder. Discover the fascinating history of both the English landscape park of Wissekerke Castle and the Bazel polder. Graaf Philppe Vilain XIIII and his wife Zoë de Feltz renovated the castle into a gem of modernism, rarely seen at that time. The entire surroundings of the castle had to show how progressive they were and leave the high-ranking visitor stunned with amazement: the Tudor-style entrance, the English landscape park that was very fashionable at the time, the never-before-seen suspension bridge... Even the choice of trees sometimes reflected their political preference. But they also had a great interest in the polder and agriculture. By 1850, about half of it was owned by the Vilain XIIIIs. We walk along 'twissels' and 'rabatten', the Fassaat, and the decoy. The emphasis is on history, but of course, the operation of the polder is also explained with a touch of nature here and there. Walking shoes. Dogs on a leash are welcome. Not suitable for wheelchair users More info: www.barbiergidsen.be
