Bumblebees are the fluffiest of our wild bees. Gently buzzing, you have surely seen them fly by, visit a fruit blossom, or mysteriously disappear underground. But how well do you really know them? Unknown is unloved, and we want to change that. Did you know that there were once 31 different species of bumblebees in our country? That real queen battles take place among bumblebees? We would love to tell you all about it! During the 'Bumblebee Weekend', we will look for bumblebees together on a plot in the Merelbeekse Scheldemeersen. The guides will introduce you to our fluffiest wild bees, and you will learn a lot about their way of life and relationship with certain plants. You probably already knew that they are important pollinating insects, but had you heard of long-tongued and short-tongued ones? We will also teach you how to recognize the different species of bumblebees: the Red-tailed bumblebee, Akkerhommel of Boomhommel will no longer be a mystery to you, and who knows, we might even get to see a rarer species!
