RIETLAND tells the story of reed cutter Johan who, when he finds the lifeless body of a girl on his land, is struck by a vague sense of guilt. While caring for his granddaughter, he searches for answers and tries to track down the evil. Focusing your camera on what you have known from youth can considerably strengthen nostalgic blinders. But in the case of director Sven Bresser, there is remarkably little wistfulness in his impressive feature debut. The film recounts how the murder of a girl keeps a rural community in its grip.
