The street names are the mirror of the past of a city. After all, it is no coincidence that the Kiekenmarkt, the Botermarkt, the Zuivelmarkt, the Vismarkt are located around the Sint-Quintinuskathedraal and that the Paardsdemerstraat was buzzing with activity first in the Middle Ages and later in the nineteenth century.
To this day, a number of street names remind us of the wonderful work that monastic orders provided in the organization of education, caring for the sick, burying the dead, and their commitment to the poor. Other street names refer to the historical function of this place, such as one of the many markets that the city once knew. In this way, the street names let you discover the city from a different perspective.
