Soft leaves

Tuesday, film day! In her moving Belgian debut film ‘Soft leaves’, director Miwako Van Weyenberg sketches the story of eleven-year-old Yuna, who is fully searching for herself and her place in the world. She shares that world with her brother Kai and her father Julien, a high jump coach. When her father ends up in the hospital after an unfortunate fall, Yuna and Kai are suddenly left all alone. Their normal little life is even more disrupted when their Japanese mother and half-sister come to Belgium to take care of them. ‘Soft leaves’ is a layered and successful exploration of identity, growing up, difficult family ties, and the unspoken differences that divide and connect us.
