Love across all borders How long can a grieving spouse continue imaginary conversations? In Sonder he stops and starts a real conversation. Visual artist Kaat Pype unexpectedly lost her mother. From her bond with her father and their shared grief, a photography project emerged: she photographed him in the homes of single women of his generation; they are all interiors where someone is also missed. Regisseur Yves Degryse filmed the encounters. Now Kaat, her father, and Yves are on stage together with musician Berlinde Deman. And every night he talks to his deceased wife. Every night again. Every night differently. Artificial intelligence recalls her voice, her presence, her face. Waar Orpheus enters the underworld to retrieve Eurydice, Sonder uses technology. Not as a miracle cure, but as an opening. An opening through which love can breathe for a little while longer, before the silence overtakes it again.
