La puta tierra begins as a blank sheet. Acht Limburgse young people from diverse backgrounds will color it in, each with their own language, story, body, memory, identity and history.
In word, image, sound and movement, the young people express the complexity of their identity. It is a story of navigating and balancing between where you are and who you are. About soil, land, space, territoriality, exclusion mechanisms and appropriation, but also about softness, care and coming home. A story with a snowed-under happy end: that what we do share with each other is not tied to a place or culture.
La puta tierra, Spanish for ‘the cursed earth’, wants to give voices to a generation in a split, which is rooted in both the home culture of its parents and that of the country in which it was born. It is anger and softness mixed together, out of love for and concern for the mother, the earth and how we treat her and each other.
La puta tierra is our fourth youth production made with an all-Limburg cast. Samuel Valor Reyes (graduated in 2022 from Toneelacademie Maastricht) grew up in Beringen after his parents fled fascist Spain.
