Bunker Day: visible and hidden bunkers at Tyne Cot Cemetery

Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog, the Germans built successive fortified lines in Flanders. Both in and between these lines, they built bunkers and fortified strongholds. At the place where Tyne Cot Cemetery lies today, the Passendale de Duitse Flandern-I-Stellung ran during the Battle of, with a group of fortified posts or 'pillboxes'. Of the five bunkers on this site, two are still visible today. One bunker lies under the Cross of Sacrifice, while two others were demolished for the construction of the missing persons memorial. Blowing up the three preserved bunkers would have caused too much damage to the cemetery; therefore, they were integrated into the cemetery. They are the last remnants of the once-mighty Flandern-I-Stellung in Flanders.
