Frank Peter Zimmermann & Dmytro Choni

For this recital at Flagey, violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann joins forces with pianist Dmytro Choni, one of the revelations of last season’s Flagey Piano Days. Together, they bring Franz Schubert into dialogue with Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern, teacher and pupil of the revolutionary Second Viennese School. At first hearing, their musical worlds may seem worlds apart, yet surprising connections lie beneath the surface. The introspective lyricism of Schubert’s Violin Sonata in A major finds an echo in Webern’s concentrated expression, while the spontaneous virtuosity of the Rondo in B minor and the Fantasy in C major is given an unexpected counterpart in Schoenberg’s Phantasy. This programme thus reveals not only Schubert’s versatility, but also the subtle threads that connect different musical eras.
