Charity during the Ancien Régime and the 19th century

From the 13th century until the end of the ancien régime, the Poor or Holy Spirit Tables were active. They provided material aid to the needy who had shelter. Homeless people and those who were too old, too young, or foundlings were taken in in almshouses. Hospitalia’, Christian-inspired shelters for poor travelers and pilgrims appear in densely populated residential areas and on the main access roads. Lepers were banished to the leprosarium Sint Pieter, other sick people could go to the St Janshospitaal. There was also shelter for foundlings, orphans, the elderly, and the mentally ill.
