Refinement, elegance, and grandeur. That is the French court of the 17th and 18th centuries. But the music from that time shows a surprisingly poignant humanity and emotionality. The so-called opéra-ballets and the tragédies lyriques tell, with impressive drama, stories about various mythical figures and their troubles that are all too human. In the more intimate court songs or airs de cour, the human voice is fully deployed to extensively sing about themes like love and loss.
