With ‘The Future was Today’, Sonico celebrates the hundredth birthday of Eduardo Rovira, one of the most enigmatic and innovative voices of the tango. In a staged concert, inspired by the atmosphere of a late-night show from the 1970s, the ensemble invites you to (re)discover a quiet genius: an artist who dedicated himself completely to his art, not for fame or wealth, but out of pure love for music and its boundless possibilities. Rovira’s hundredth birthday coincided with the ten-year existence of Sonico. In April 2025, the ensemble began a milestone tour through Argentina, which resulted in the recording of their fifth album, ‘ROVIRA 100’, a revival of Rovira’s most emblematic works, including ‘Sonico’ (1969) and ‘Que lo Paren’ (1975). Now ‘ROVIRA 100’ comes to life on stage with ‘The Future was Today’, a cinematic concert that fuses live music with video projections, light design, and photo montages that were created in Buenos Aires, and immerses the audience in the vibrant zeitgeist of Rovira’s era. In de Argentijnse press, Sonico is labeled as “saviors of the tango nuevo”. The magazines Billboard and Rolling Stone count Sonico among the top 10 of the most essential contemporary tango ensembles.
