‘fiction and reality, sometimes in a stranglehold, sometimes like a hug’
he untied his scarf
hung it on the flagpole
and hoisted it up
“that way you can see me waving”
he said
“if you look up
you see me waving”
and he left
In KAMP, propaganda is used to present the exclusion of a population group as logic itself. With a smile, in prime time. At the same time, we see how those citizens in their turn make up stories and thus succeed in creating their own livable reality after all. However small.
This performance sketches a picture of a society that could arise tomorrow. Regimes have been launching fake news and conspiracy theories as a cause for war for centuries. So-called minorities have been isolated in reserves, in ‘holiday camps’ or ‘improvement trajectories’ for just as long. Both in the past and now.
With black humor, speed, and a strong cast, it becomes visible how deception works and how imagination can simultaneously offer resistance.
A performance about the danger of the lie and the beauty of making things up. All this with a top team: Sofie Decleir, Jeroen Van der Ven, Zouzou Ben Chikha, Astrid Cox, Robbert Vervloet, and Tania Van der Sanden.
