Symphonie fantastique - Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen & Duo ART'uur conducted by Martijn Dendievel

“The first psychedelic symphony in history,” thought Leonard Bernstein. In five parts, Berlioz tells in his Symphonie fantastique the story of a young artist who, tormented by a hopeless love, takes opium. To give musical form to a hallucinatory trip of visions, madness, and despair, Berlioz takes untrodden and revolutionary paths. That same spirit of innovation sounds with the Amerikaanse John Adams and the Belgische Wim Henderickx, who died unexpectedly in 2022 at the age of 60. Henderickx wrote both an ode to and a renewal of classical music. Just as with Berlioz, percussion and brass instruments also provide a new and idiosyncratic orchestral color for him (himself also a percussionist). Martijn Dendievel comes as chief conductor of the Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen - artistic partner of CCHA - a second time this season (see also Richter & Tchaikovsky on Oct 09, 26). He brings Wim Van Hasselt and Koen Plaetinck, two Flemish soloists who have earned their stripes with many ensembles and orchestras.
