Matthias Goerne & Camerata RCO

De Duitse baritone Matthias Goerne is one of the most gifted lieder singers of our time. He comes to Ghent with a selection from the extensive Hollywood Songbook that Hanns Eisler wrote in Los Angeles, when he lived there in exile together with so many other German artists and intellectuals to escape persecution by the Nazis. Bertolt Brecht, one of his fellow sufferers in America, provided many of the lyrics. The original piano accompaniment was specially arranged for this concert for the musicians of Camerata RCO, a chamber ensemble consisting of members of the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest van Amsterdam. Hanns Eisler was the last exponent of the great German lied tradition. In this concert, he stands shoulder to shoulder with the composer with whom it had begun more than a hundred years earlier: Franz Schubert.
