Walk: Langs Romeinse Wegen in Duisburg

Sun, 9 Aug 2026 · 14:00
Sint-Katharinakerk ( Duisburg ), Tervuren
€2
Duisburg was located at a crossroads of two secondary Roman roads. Presumably, a Roman road station stood at that intersection, now the Kerkplaats. Until the 1950s, the Kerkplaats was occupied by a large pool, the Doelpoel, also called the “Roman pool” on old postcards. The road intersection in the center was the starting point of the local Roman cadastre: a grid of squares with a side of half a Roman mile (+/- 720 meters), the traces of which (roads and country lanes) can still be found in the Duisburg landscape to this day. The walk starts at 2 PM at the Kerkplaats and goes along some of these Roman roads. We end at (and in) the Saint Catherine Church, the choir of which was presumably built on the ruins of a Roman fortress, which is said to have given Duisburg its name. Planned duration: 2.5 hours.
