Funny, honest, and deeply human: "I Swear" tells the inspiring, true story of John Davidson, a pioneer whose honesty and humor helped the world better understand what it means to live with Tourette syndrome. John grows up in Scotland in the 80s, when little was known about the syndrome. His unpredictable and confrontational behavior was seen by his environment as weird and crazy. Teachers thought he was mentally ill and belonged in an asylum, while peers thought he was using the syndrome as an excuse to cause trouble. What followed were years of bullying and punishments that John never deserved. In the film, we follow John from his teenage years in the 80s to his contemporary life, where he has become an ambassador for people with Tourette syndrome. We see how John struggles with his condition. He is not understood by his family, cannot find a job, and has trouble becoming part of society. Until he meets Dottie, the mother of a friend, who helps him embrace his condition and understand himself better. John's journey is as heartbreaking as it is funny. As a viewer, you can't help but crack up when John lets out his tics. Think of making uncomfortable noises, unintentionally lashing out at people, or blurting out the filthiest thoughts. But behind the humor, the film primarily shows the human being. A human being who would do anything to be accepted and build a life for himself.
